Not too big a thing, just wasn't sure what size to upload at first, tried a few different sizes and then realised it wasn't compressing too well... and now been suspended from uploading for 20 minutes =/ Would you happen to know the ideal dimensions and filetype for avatars? My png one doesn't seem to compress too well.
so does jaiku convert gif uploads to jpeg? perhaps if you (chisa) save the gif on your computer as jpeg file with no pixelation - then reupload it to jaiku - then perhaps it wont get pixelated...
checked the code, we do lower the quality of the images, increased the quality factor of the conversion for you, if you could check whether it makes a difference for you that'd be nice (i honestly don't see very much difference to begin with so your eye is probably better than mine)
Thanks for that! It's a little bit better now. Sorry for the trouble, I'm just one of those obsessive pixel pushers. It probably isn't much of an issue for images with less flat vector shapes than mine.

What do you see as the main problem with the way photos work?

buddy icons are 75x75 and smaller thumbnails 30x30 px, the larger ones are currently scaled down, which probably causes the pixelation you are seeing

Figured that out after a while, thanks :) I'll try a jpeg when it lets me upload something again...
Do you know why there's pixelation in the background images?

Not certain about that. I trust you're absolutely sure the pixelation's introduced by Jaiku and not an artifact already in the picture?

pretty sure we aren't doing anything to the background images that could cause pixelation

Absolutely sure. It looks okay on my Twitter page: http://twitter.com/Chisa

Switching back & forth between them now... not sure I see a difference (admittedly my eyes aren't that great)

It's mostly around the edges of things, particularly around the bit that says 'Chisa'.
I know its a relatively small thing, but I'm picky about images ._.

there is more pixelation on the jaiku file (a 19kb jpg) in comparison with the twitter one (a 14kb gif)
chisa: did you upload the exact same file to both twitter and jaiku?

Yup, definitely the same image. I also uploaded it to my server, looks okay there and still 14kb http://www.chigarden.com/jaikubg.gif

I've redone the image as a jpg, looks pretty much the same. The same file on my server for comparison: http://www.chigarden.com/jaiku.jpg
